Why Emerson?

If you have found this site and have had some time to check it out you’re probably asking yourself two questions:

  1. You’re immediate question is probably, “Why Emerson?”    – and –
  2. What’s up with the main picture and silhouette pose? (see above for visual)

Both great questions.  To be completely honest with you I have no clue other than it just felt right.

You should know I am not a huge Ralph Waldo Emerson buff; in fact, I haven’t even read a single piece of his work nor do I really know anything of the life he lived.  However, I love his quotes, especially quotes about travel and life, and I especially this quote here:

“Dare to live the life that you’ve dreamed for yourself.                Go forward and make your dreams come true.”

The main theme all started from a project I was working on in my Cultural Photography class during my semester study abroad in Costa Rica.  The project involved creating a collage of digitally edited photos based around the central theme of silhouettes and the beach.  One day in class I found myself playing around with two separate photos on Adobe Photoshop.  I ended up merging the photos, played around with the lighting, and the colors when all of a sudden one of my fellow classmates looked over and said “Woahh, Brad that looks so cool!”  For the first time I actually looked at the photo I was playing with and was like “Oh yeah, I really do like this!” Click. Save. Done for the day.

A few days later I pulled the newly created image file on my computer and really looked at it.  To me it was (and still is!) inspirational.  The coloring, the silhouette pose, all of it!  I decided to add an inspirational quote to go along with the photo and well, can you guess which one I used?  Yep! Emerson’s quote!

To me, this entire image and text is very inspirational.  [Probably because it all occurred during my year abroad experience which was the most incredible and inspirational thing I’ve ever done].

Nowadays, I make this quote something to live by.  Everyday I constantly remind myself to dare to live the life I dream.  To be happy and feel inspired even in the simplicity of everyday life.  My goal is to not feel constrained by social pressures and to just simply live life while still achieving greatness.  I hope to mark down the events in my life in which I feel I am living life and making my dreams come true and publish them here.  All of it is inspirational to me and I hope that maybe you will find some inspiration too.

Take a look around and let me know what you think!  I’m always open for critical feedback.
